Dementia itself is not a specific disease, but a term used to describe a range of illnesses and conditions that present issues with cognitive skills, such as memory loss, language and communication problems and problem-solving skills. The most common and well-known form of dementia, is Alzheimer’s disease, but there are many different known causes for dementia. It is not a natural part of ageing, nor is it something that only affects older people although our risk factors for developing dementia increase as we age.

At Gold Care Homes we understand that people living with dementia are individuals, and one person’s symptoms may be completely different to another with the same diagnosis. It is a complex condition that requires patience and understanding to enable those living with dementia to live well.

Our approach to dementia care is to ensure that we foster an environment of inclusivity, where our residents feel safe, and supported to retain their independence for as long as possible.

We take time to get to know all of our residents, but this is particularly important in our approach to dementia care, where residents may not be able to fully communicate their preferences. Involving family, friends and healthcare professionals, as well as our resident as far possible, allows us to have a holistic view of every individual in our care, to enable us to deliver tailored care that supports the unique needs of each resident.

Behind every resident living with dementia is a person, and we take care to always recognise this, exploring their past careers, hobbies and interests so that the activities we provide and the discussions we hold are meaningful to them. Specialised activities that promote wellbeing in those living with dementia are arranged too, such as art, pet or music therapy sessions.

Our approach to dementia care also takes into account food and hydration to ensure that each resident maintains a healthy diet. Whilst we support our residents to eat in the social space of our dining rooms, or their own room, we know too that some people living with dementia prefer to snack throughout the day, so healthy snacks and drinks are always available.

Ultimately, our aim is to support our residents living with dementia, to live a life of their choosing, promoting dignity, respect and independence every step of the way.
