At St Mary’s Court Care Home, our team recently took part in a powerful and eye opening training experience when the Virtual Dementia Tour bus visited the home.
The session was delivered by specialist trainers, Training 2 Care, who gave our staff and visiting relatives the opportunity to better understand what living with dementia may feel like. Through a series of immersive exercises, our participants experienced some of the sensory and physical challenges that people living with dementia can face every day.
Around 30 people took part in the Virtual Dementia Tour, including members of our care team and one of our residents’ relatives.
One of the participants, is Jane and her husband, Keith lives at St Marys Court and is living with dementia, which made the experience especially personal for her. The training gave her a powerful insight into how the world can feel for someone living with the condition, helping her better understand some of the challenges Keith may experience. Jane described the experience as “incredibly moving” and continued to say:
“I cannot express how important this training is to help people understand what it feels like to live with Dementia,” she said. “I walked back into Keith’s room a better person.”
Experiences like this are an important part of how we continue to learn and grow as a team at St Mary’s Court Care Home. By gaining a deeper understanding of dementia, we can better support our residents and ensure they feel understood, respected and cared for every day.
Many of our team members shared how valuable the experience was, describing it as an unbelievable insight into the challenges some of our residents may face. The training helped deepen their understanding and strengthened their commitment to providing compassionate, person centred care.
