We were delighted to welcome a very special visitor to Alan Morkill House as Peanut the Cockapoo joined us for a pet therapy session with our wonderful residents. Following a kind offer from Peanut’s owner to host a taster session, our residents and team members alike enjoyed an afternoon filled with smiles, companionship, and plenty of tail wags.
Animal-assisted activities are widely recognised for the positive impact they can have on older people, particularly those living with dementia. Spending time with animals can help reduce feelings of anxiety, encourage conversation, evoke treasured memories, and provide a calming presence. For many of our residents, Peanut’s visit sparked conversations about much-loved family pets and created meaningful moments of connection with both one another and our team.
Throughout the afternoon, residents enjoyed stroking Peanut, watching her confidently explore the home, and rewarding her with treats as she showed off a selection of impressive tricks. Here are just a few special moments from the day:

One resident summed up the visit perfectly, saying:
“Peanut is the most gorgeous girl.”
Our team were equally delighted by the difference Peanut made, with one colleague describing her as “a lovely addition.” Following such a positive response, we’re thrilled that Peanut will be returning to visit our residents on a regular basis.
At Alan Morkill House, we believe that exceptional care goes beyond meeting daily needs. By introducing meaningful experiences such as pet therapy, we create opportunities for comfort, companionship, and emotional wellbeing that enrich everyday life. It’s these thoughtful touches, alongside our person-centred approach to care, that help make Alan Morkill House feel truly like home.
