Some celebrations do not need to be big to feel meaningful.
At Hillside Nursing Home, one of our recent afternoons brought together music, flowers, sweet treats and plenty of smiles as we took time to celebrate the wonderful mothers and motherly figures in our home. It was less about the occasion itself and more about making people feel appreciated and remembered.
There were little moments throughout the day that stood out. Doreen enjoying herself on her feet as the music played, Betty, Jean, Carol and Elizabeth each receiving a rose and taking time to chat with the team. For some, it was the songs that brought back memories, while others simply enjoyed sitting together, sharing cakes and company.
What felt especially lovely was how personal it all was. Roses were handed out one by one, time was taken to sit with residents, and nobody was left out, whether they joined in from the lounge or preferred a quieter moment in their room. It is often those smaller gestures that mean the most.
Jean smiled as she received her flower, saying, “Thank you very much for this wonderful rose, it smells amazing,” while Carol called it “a beautiful surprise.” Betty shared how proud she felt to be a mother and part of the Hillside community.
Looking back, it was simply a really nice afternoon. Good company, familiar music and a chance to make our residents feel celebrated in a way that felt genuine and thoughtful. Sometimes, that is more than enough.
