Leila, Perivale’s Ladies Golf Club Captain of 1972 and 1973, recently celebrated her landmark 100th birthday. Celebrations started a day before, whereby Leila received a lovely bouquet of flowers and card from the golf club. Leila was a regular member, playing on average 6 days a week and was a large part of the golfing community, pursuing her wish to keep active whereby she proudly achieved two holes in one.
On the morning of her birthday, Brackenbridge House team arranged a hairdressing pampering session by Victoria, whilst other staff members were busy decorating for a celebratory tea party later during the day, including a home-made birthday cake. Leila was delighted with all the decorations, banners and cards she received and felt thoroughly spoilt sitting in the special birthday throne, organised by the team. Leila was presented with Her Majesty the Queens centenary birthday card, along with other wonderful gifts.
Leila said: “I cannot believe the day that I had! It has been brilliant. I’m overwhelmed by everyone’s kindness and wasn’t expecting all these celebrations, it was a lovely surprise and I am very lucky to have been able to share it with two of my friends and everyone here.”
Leila was born on 11th January 1922 in Hayes and lived in Greenford and Northolt during her lifetime. When she was young, she was drawn to a piano that was in her Father’s Aunt’s house and started to learn to play. Leila went on to study at the Trinity College of Music in London and passed her exams with honours. She worked with the London Philharmonic Orchestra for several years saying “Those were some of the best years of my life, I learnt a lot and loved to listen to the musicians, but unfortunately due an accident which took 6 months to heal, I never got to complete my Diploma. I still love listening to music but unfortunately am unable to play any more”.
Florence Gamino, Care Home Manager of Brackenbridge House said “Leila is a beautiful lady both inside and out. It is an absolute honour and privilege to have her as part of the Gold Care Family at Brackenbridge House. We were thrilled to be able to do what we could to make her day so special.”
