Additional Information
At Queensway House you will get to know all the staff as friends. We will identify a particular person who will be able to help you with personal things you need, such as bathing, shopping, getting to a place of worship, writing letters and helping you to mix with other residents. The term we use to describe this person is a 'Key Worker'.
Accommodation:
You are encouraged to make your room as much like home as possible by bringing in small pieces of furniture and other personal belongings. Visitors are, of course, always welcome. You can make the room your own by bringing pieces of furniture and other belongings with you. You will have a key to your room. There is also a bedside locker with a lockable drawer for you to keep small valuables and money. Staff and visitors will not enter your room unless invited by you. Your room is your personal space. You may use it as you choose. Domestic staff will negotiate with you a convenient time to clean your room. However, it has to be recognised that some people have a legal right to inspect any part of a Residential Care Home. Our home also has married couples staying with us. A double room is provided. At Queensway we have the facilities for two double bedrooms.
Lounge and dining area:
The home has one dining room and various areas to relax and socialise with the other residents and receive visitors. You will be able to make use of the privacy of your own room as you choose.
Meals:
Residents have a choice from the daily menu and if a resident is not happy with the options then an alternative can be provided. We also offer meals to suite specific dietary requirements. We have very experienced cooks who can provide special diets. Every effort will be made to meet your medical and cultural needs. Our home offers a choice of menu. Likes and dislikes about food can be raised at resident’s meetings and discussed with you on admission. We try to be as flexible as possible for all meals. Arrangements can be made if you want to go out and are unable to return in time for a meal. You can choose to miss a meal or request a snack at another time.
Activities:
We pride ourselves on our range of activities to suit all tastes. There's always something going on from quizzes to hand massages and board games to shopping days in the nearby town of Hemel Hempstead. We support the UK National Dementia Strategy which ensures that key life skills are maintained, building purpose and providing nurture for Residents with Dementia. We organise group and individual activities but in our experience it is the one-to-one sessions that our Residents find most calming and rewarding.
The activities organiser arranges regular outings and activities in which you can take part. The activities room is located on the first floor. The notice board in the main lobby has all the information about daily and weekly activities and outings planned. Activities are not designed to keep busy, or for filling up the hours to avoid boredom. They are also for the healthy maintenance of the body, mind, and spirit which can occur with elderly issues as we age. The activities organiser also arranges regular group shopping trips into town for those of you who do not feel comfortable coming and going on your own.
Services:
We provide individual personal care that you need, including a Laundry service and Social Activities and are able to arrange Hairdressing Facilities, Chiropody, Dental Care, Eye Care and Library service.
Hairdressing: We have a visiting hairdresser operating in our own salon usually every Monday and Tuesday. If you wish to continue to use your own hairdresser this can also be arranged for a small charge on the remaining days each week. This would need to be booked via the manager.
Laundry: We provide a laundry service in the home. Bed linen is always changed on a weekly basis. Personal clothing can be laundered as and when you require it. All clothing will need to be labelled.
Telephone service: You may have your own telephone installed in your room at your expense if you wish. There is also a telephone available for all our residents, located downstairs opposite the Hairdresser’s room. This facility accepts coins, 10p, 20p and 50p denomination.
Visitors:
Your family and friends can come to see you anytime you like, and continue to be involved in you care if that is what you want. Guests can have a meal with you by prior arrangement. A nominal charge will be made for this service. Tea and coffee making facilities are available both in the upstairs and downstairs kitchen. A donation system is in operation, which goes towards our resident’s fund.
Other Information:
Queensway House keeps small items for sale, e.g. toiletries and stationery at the home. This facility is usually available on a Friday morning and our Activities organiser manages it.
We also encourage all our residents to voice their opinions. We hold regular resident meetings and at various times you may be asked to complete questionnaires. We are always keen to hear your ideas and suggestions as to how we can improve the service we provide. We also have a quality circle, members include residents, relatives and staff, who meet regularly to discuss quality within the home and introduce changes which can enhance the lives of everybody in the home.
Living at Queensway House can be a positive experience enabling you to make life more interesting and exciting with a positive future in front of you.
