Ashling Turner from Halcyon Days treks Mount Kilimanjaro
"When I decided 9 months ago to Trek Mt Kilimanjaro I really did not know what I was doing.
I have spent the last 9 mts training and fundraising for this event and it has been emotional.
My husband trained me so I could physically deal with Mt Kili but nothing can prepare you for how mentally challenging she is and the altitude. We all had altitude sickness at some point. Tanzania is a beautiful place and Mt Kili itself is amazing her scenery changes so dramatically. Wonderful Mountain Dave described summit night as this “You have flu, your wearing willies filled with concrete, you have drunk a bottle of whiskey and you have a plastic bag on your head”....all this and you have to walk for 6 hours to summit...then back down to camp...then pack up your kit and walk another 6 hours to Millennium base which is your camp for that night. The feeling of achievement is indescribable and I am so proud I did it. The person in the above photo is Mary my tent buddy...she had to endure not only the Trek but my sleep walking...frost bite on my toe’s for that! Now a Life long friend.
The Trek itself was physically and mentally challenging also, the most amazing experience of my life and I want to say Thank you to everyone @ Halcyon Days and Gold care homes for their support. Also a huge Thank you to family and friends for their support with training (Sarah & Millie) and sponsorship. If you have yet to sponsor me you can do so on www.justgiving.com/ashlingturner or pop a cheque to me. There were 30 people in my group and so far we have raised £105 thousand for Alzheimer’s society and the sponsorship is still coming in. My Trek lasted seven days; for the person suffering with Alzheimer’s their Trek is on going...your support is important to them...Thank you Kili for the memories.... Ashling."
HCPA Announces its Winners!
On Friday 8th July 2011, The Hertfordshire Care Providers Association (HCPA) dedicated a night to those of ‘unsung heroes’ in the caring community. HCPA decided there was not enough recognition of good practice in Hertfordshire and therefore they created the first HCPA Care Awards in Hertfordshire for their finalists and winners. The nominees believed they were simply doing their job, but they have proved they are making a difference to those individuals needing care.
Among the many entries within Hertfordshire, Gold Care Homes was one of the three finalists for Organisation with more than 50 Employees Award and Dawn Richmond-Turner - Manager at Halcyon Days, was one of the three finalists for Manager of the Year Award.
Gold Care Homes is proud to announce Ashling Turner – Deputy Manager at Halcyon Days won the award for Team Leader of the Year. Ashling is pictured left.
The residents and staff at Halcyon Days are so proud of Ashling to receive the Team Leader of the Year award and they continue to give their support to her.
A quote taken from the HCPA Care Awards brochure tells us what Ashling will be doing this September to help further in the care community.
“In September 2011, Ashling will be trekking to Mount Kilimanjaro on behalf of the Alzheimer’s Society. She is doing this to thank them for the support they give to the residents and relatives at Halcyon Days and for their training materials which she uses in her work. To help raise the money for the trip Ashling is organising an ‘It’s a Knockout’ competition open to all the homes of Gold Care Homes. Each team makes a donation to participate. As well as being for a good cause, great for staff morale and team building it will be a wonderful afternoon for the residents and their relatives who will be encourage to cheer for their staff team”.
