Kent House is a 40 bedded Residential care home and is located in a quiet residential cul-de-sac in Harrow Weald off Long Elmes, not far from the Uxbridge Road. It has been designed to allow you to move around with maximum ease. The site is level, and it is possible to walk into the house, through the building and out into the garden without negotiating any steps. The garden is fully landscaped and provided with a pathway and furnished seating areas. There is car parking space at the front of the building. There are bus routes and trains approx 120 yards from Kent House and there are local shops within 200 yards including, a post office, newsagents, fish and chip shops, Indian Restaurant and a small supermarket.

About the staff
Experience and qualifications of management team.
Manager:
Susan McClarey is the Registered Manager and has extensive experience of in excess of 20 years working at Kent House Residential Home for the Elderly as a Night Carer and then as a Care Coordinator working closely with the Care Manager. She also has a very good knowledge of changing legislation. Sue has an NVQ 2 & 3 and is currently doing QCF NVQ Diploma 5 in leadership for Health & Social Care this year. She also has a Red Cross First Aid Certificate.
Administrator:
Carol Flint is the Administrative Assistant for Kent House for the past 19 years. She has experience in secretarial work, built up from working as an office junior, telephonist, typist & audio secretary. Carol also worked in our other home Brackenbridge House until becoming a full time Administrator at Kent House.
Senior Carers:
Catherine Kennedy: has worked at Kent House for over 20 years. She started as a Domestic and then decided to do Caring. She was a Day Carer until she took up the post of Care Coordinator in 2007. Catherine has NVQ 2 & 3.
Ruth Medjouad: Ruth has worked at Kent House part time for over 20 years as a day and night carer. She stepped up to Care Co ordinator in May this year.
NIlika Tamang: Has worked at Kent House over 10 years. She worked part time at first as she was at college. She has been a Care Co ordinator since 2010. Nilika has NVQ 2 & is about to start NVQ 3.
Lorraine Sullivan; has worked at Kent House since 2006. She worked Night Shifts until 2010 when she became a Care Coordinator. Lorraine has NVQ 2 and is about to start NVQ 3.
There are two members of staff on waking duty throughout every night as well as a senior member of staff who works as the on call officer, who can be in the building within minutes should an emergency occur.
All staff works a shift pattern, so you will see a variety of different people throughout each week.
Staff training is an essential element in providing excellent staff. It is vital to ensure that staff are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to provide residents with the quality of care that they have every right to expect.
New staffs, initially, undergo a period of induction training which takes place in the home. They progress from induction training to more specialised fields of training, which again are in-house and linked to a training programme which is undertaken by all care staff within our organisation including NVQ's.
Staffs also have the opportunity to attend any relevant course provided outside the home by various professional training bodies.

Additional Information
For the 40 residents living at Kent House there is up to approximately 42 members of staff in the home, working various shifts. There are usually several visitors and occasional volunteers in the home and with such a large number of people involved, daily life does vary considerably. We encourage residents to maintain their usual lifestyle, including their links with the community. Many residents continue to enjoy their previous hobbies and pursuits, both in and outside of the home. A number of residents enjoy going out for a meal or on weekend visits, or longer holidays with families and/or friends, and having their families and friends to visit.
We primarily cater for older people, both male and female, usually over the age of 65. Kent House can cater for people who suffer from dementia and dementia related confusion and memory deficit and who also require care.
Kent House offers personal centred care in a home from home environment for those in need of care. We are committed to improving and maintaining the quality of our care.
Accommodation:
Kent House has 36 bed sitting rooms, 32 of which are single occupancy rooms and 4 of which are twin occupancy rooms. All bedrooms are equipped with en suite toilets, washing facilities and are fully carpeted throughout. The rooms are spacious enough to allow room for residents to bring in their own furnishings and effects. There are also TV and telephone points in every room.
There are five specially designed bathrooms, with assisted bath facilities and there are 4 toilets for disabled use on the ground floor. There is also a kitchenette for the residents use on the first floor.
Lounge and dining area:
There is one dining room which is spacious and three lounges for the residents to relax. Upstairs there is a small library room where residents can take their families and/or friends when visiting. Kent House also has a conservatory which gives the room a lot of light and space. In the conservatory there is a piano which the residents can enjoy music and a sing along.
Meals:
Residents have a choice from the daily menu and if a resident is not happy with the options then an alternative can be provided. We also offer meals to suite specific dietary requirements. Hot beverages and biscuits are served mid morning, mid afternoon and evening. Facilities are available for you to make yourself or your visitors a drink or snack whenever you wish. Meals can be provided for your visitors, if requested. A small fee is made for visitor's meals.
Activities:
Service Users will be offered the opportunity to participate in social and recreational activities. Popular activities include music and movement, artwork including collages, baking and reminiscence. Service Users with dementia enjoy rummage boxes, sorting and folding, and spending time one to one time with care and activities staff. Staff will spend time with Service Users who are restricted to bed reading to them, chatting, doing manicures and other one to one activities as enjoyed by the Service User.
We offer a variety of entertainments such as bingo sessions, card games, crafts etc. Television, radio, video and DVD films, and CD music.
Throughout the year we enjoy visits from groups who present entertainment such as dancing displays, singing and theatre groups. Various clothing and footwear retailers come along throughout the year to display their goods which allows you to make your purchases in the comfort of your own home.
The home has gardens for Service Users to make use of in safety. Service Users can also enjoy helping in the garden with planting and maintaining the hanging baskets and other flower beds. Other Service Users simply enjoy time outside.
Social events and various fund raising activities are all part of life in the home. Any other suggestions are always welcome. The entertainments and activities are all selected by the residents in discussion with the staff. However, there is no pressure applied to anyone to join in organised activities if they are not to their taste.
Services:
Doctors: If your own doctor is unable to visit you and maintain your medical care you may select a local doctor of your choice who will visit you as necessary. Alternatively, we have a number of visiting GP's, any of whom will be pleased to accept you as a patient.
Medication: If you have been used to looking after your own medicines, you will be encouraged to continue to do so. If not, the staff will look after it for you and give it to you as and when prescribed by your doctors.
We are unable to provide medication which has not been specifically prescribed for you by your doctor, other than simple household remedies, although you may purchase your own, but please keep them locked in your room, and check with the staff that they do not interfere with any prescribed medication you may be taking.
Chiropody: A chiropodist visits the home regularly to treat residents who are eligible for treatment under NHS provision. However, if you need to visit a chiropodist urgently, or wish to be attended by a private chiropodist, a fee is payable.
Optician and Dentist: If you require the services of an optician or dentist, we can arrange for you to attend local practices or to receive the services of visiting practitioners in the home. Alternatively, you may also visit practices of your choice.
Physiotherapy: The services of a visiting physiotherapist may be obtained on request via your GP.
Dressing and Bathing: If you need help with dressing, undressing and/or bathing the care staff are available and will be happy to assist you. We offer various bathing and showering facilities to accommodate any personal physical disabilities and ensure your comfort.
Shared Care: In the event of illness, or indeed at any time, relatives and friends are most welcome to participate in providing your care, if that is your wish and they are willing.
Laundry: We have our own laundry where your clothes can be washed. We do have to ask you, or your relatives, to put your name on your personal clothing (and any other possessions you may wish to have laundered here), before you move in, to prevent it from being returned to the wrong person, or mislaid.
If you have any articles of a particularly delicate fabric, please bring them to the attention of the laundress. We cannot be held responsible for any damages incurred during laundry.
Dry cleaning: If you have any items which require dry cleaning, we will arrange for collection, cleaning and delivering, at your own expense.
Hairdressing: We have a fully equipped hairdressing salon on the ground floor. A hairdresser visits the home weekly, should you not wish to or be able to visit an outside salon. A fee is payable for cutting, shampooing, blow drying, setting, colouring and perms. The hairdresser attends to both male and female hairdressing requirements.
The salon is also available for your own hairdresser or family to provide for your hairdressing requirements if you prefer.
Trolley Shop Service: There is a regular trolley shop service offering a wide range of goods including, sweets, soft drinks, biscuits, toiletries, note paper etc. The trolley shop will also cater for diabetics (i.e. sweets and drinks etc.)
Religious Services: Churches of all denominations are located fairly close to the home. If you would like to attend church, we would make every effort to make this possible. A monthly non denominational service is held in the home and various ministers visit regularly.
Residents are welcome to receive the minister of their own church, at any time, in the home.
We will make every effort to comply with your religious requirements so please make them known to us.
Newspapers: Newspapers and/or magazines can be ordered for you, if you wish. They are delivered daily and you can pay for them on a weekly or monthly basis. Residents are responsible for making their own payment arrangements with the newsagent.
Library: The local library supplies the home with a wide selection of large print books which are changed regularly. You may also enjoy the use of the talking book service.
Telephone: There is a coin box telephone in the main hall on the ground floor where you can make or receive personal calls. Alternatively, you may wish to have a private telephone installed in your room.
Hospital Appointments: We will provide a staff escort, subject to staff availability, to pre-booked hospital appointments for which a charge will be made. Where a Service User requires an emergency admission to hospital we are only able to supply a staff escort, subject to staff availability, before 7 00 pm. We will, however, contact as soon as possible the next of kin in order that they can meet their relative at the hospital if they wish.
Visitors:
All visitors to the Home are asked to sign in and out of the visitors’ book, located in the foyer. This assists in providing a safe environment for all who live and work within the Home.
There are no set times for visits to the Home, but visiting is at the discretion of the senior person on duty at the time. People are encouraged to visit as often as they wish and to continue to be involved in the care of their relative/friend.
Refreshments are available on request. Visitors may share a meal with their relative for a nominal charge. It is requested that these are booked a day in advance.
Other Information:
The views of Service Users, their relatives and advocates will be actively sought with regard to the running of the Home. This will be done in such a way as to involve as many people as possible, with due care and consideration being given to the limitations of communication for some Service Users. Details of any Service User/relative meetings will be advertised on the Home’s notice boards. Minutes and action plans arising from the meetings will be circulated to Service Users and displayed on notice boards.
